When production began on Doctor Strange in Nepal back in November, we got our first look at Benedict Cumberbatch as the Sorcerer Supreme in new photos and videos, but we haven’t seen a whole lot since then. Production has now shifted to London, where Sanford Dickert and Anything Cumberbatch were able to capture new video and photos from the set. The footage and photos features both Benedict Cumberbatch as the title character, plus our first look at Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo and Benedict Wong as Wong. The video shows both Strange and Mordo rushing to check on Wong, and as we can see from the photos, Strange has been in some sort of altercation with a cut on his face.
Benedict Wong is the most recent actor to join the cast of Doctor Strange, signing on last month. His character Wong has a long history in the Marvel Comics, making his debut in in 1963’s “Strange Tales” #110. In the comics, Wong was a disciple of the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) who was sent to America to assist Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) during his journey of learning the mystical arts. The character also performs healing duties and assists with occult matters. One of his primary duties is looking after the Doctor’s body while he is astral projecting into other planes of existence. While we don’t know any details about this scene, it appears that Wong has been injured somehow.
The cast also includes Rachel McAdams as the female lead, rumored to be Night Nurse and Michael Stuhlbarg as Nicodemus West. Amy Landecker and Scott Adkins also star in unspecified roles. It isn’t known how much longer production will last on Doctor Strange, but the studio has set a November 4 release date.
We have previously seen set photos that teased the Sanctum Sanctorum, which also featured an artifact that could be the Eye of Agamotto. In the Marvel Comics, the Doctor uses this device to defeat Dormammu. The Sanctum Santorum is a building that was built upon the site of pagan sacrifices, and before that Native American rituals, which is said to be a focal point for supernatural energies. Producer Kevin Feige recently confirmed that both the Sanctum Sanctorum and the Eye of Agamotto will be featured in this highly-anticipated adventure, teasing that the Eye of Agamotto is actually the Time Gem that fits into the Infinity Gauntlet.
Scott Derrickson is directing Doctor Strange from a script by Jon Spaihts, based on the comic book character created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Production on Doctor Strange will be an international affair, with shooting taking place in London, New York, Hong Kong and Kathmandu, Nepal. Now that production has shifted to London, hopefully we’ll get to see more footage from the set. We’ll keep you posted as soon as more footage and photos surface, but util then, take a look at the video and photos below.
